EXTREME BLIZZARD WARNING ISSUED FOR SOUTHERN WISCONSIN- Snow Emergency in Kenosha

Life-Threatening Conditions Expected with Near-Zero Visibility

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an EXTREME Blizzard Warning for portions of east central, south central, and southeast Wisconsin, including Kenosha. The warning is in effect until 4:00 PM CDT this afternoon, starting at 1:49 AM CDT.

This event poses an extraordinary threat to life or property due to the combination of heavy snow rates and dangerous, sustained winds. Residents are urged to take immediate action.

CRITICAL WEATHER DETAILS:

  •  What: Heavy snow at rates up to 1 inch per hour, combined with northerly winds of 40 to 45 MPH, is causing life-threatening blizzard conditions. Visibility is expected to be less than a quarter-mile.
  •  Snow Accumulation: An additional 6 to 10 inches of snow is forecast for southwestern and south-central Wisconsin, with 3 to 6 inches expected across the southeast.
  •  Blowing Snow: Widespread blowing and drifting snow will continue even after the heavy snowfall ends, significantly reducing visibility.

IMPACTS AND URGENCY:

The hazardous conditions are already impacting the morning commute and are expected to continue through the afternoon. Travel is projected to be very difficult to impossible. Gusty winds also carry the risk of bringing down tree branches.

The National Weather Service urges everyone in the affected areas to take action within the next hour to prepare for these extreme conditions.

RECOMMENDED ACTIONS:

Travel is strongly discouraged. If you must travel, exercise extreme caution. Prepare an emergency kit in your vehicle that includes food, water, blankets, a flashlight, and a fully charged phone.
Secure loose outdoor objects that could be blown around by the 40-45 MPH winds.
Make necessary preparations now as conditions will rapidly deteriorate and emergency services may be delayed.

This is a dangerous storm. Please stay informed and monitor local news outlets and the National Weather Service for the latest updates.

The City of Kenosha has issued a snow emergency that will go into effect until 4pm.
