‘Dine & Donate for Degrees’ proceeds to support scholarships
The Mary Lou & Arthur F. Mahone Foundation is celebrating the 25th
anniversary of its service to the southeastern Wisconsin community with a fundraising tour
of 27 Kenosha-area restaurants.
In the Dine & Donate for Degrees Give Back Series, participating restaurants will send a
portion of their sales back to the Mahone Foundation to support scholarships for first-
generation students with financial need.
From May 12 through June 16, one restaurant will participate each day. (A full schedule is
at the end of this release.)
Education creates opportunity, and for 25 years, Mahone Foundation scholarships
have helped create access by making education more affordable and preparing
students for the 21st century global workplace, said Mahone Foundation Chairman Tim
Mahone.
“The dedication and generosity of our donors, sponsors and partners, along with the
commitment of all CEO scholarship recipients, and the entire southeastern
Wisconsin community have been the building blocks,” Mahone said. “Dine and
Donate for Degrees is a fun way for everyone in the community to support the
academic and career success of students in Kenosha and Racine.”
Mahone credited Waterfront Warehouse and its general manager, Desiree Britt, for
kickstarting the concept of partnering with local restaurants to build support for the
Mahone Foundation mission. A goal of engaging 25 restaurants in honor of the
foundation’s 25 years of scholarship assistance for area students was quickly reached,
and additional restaurants were added, for a total of 27 at present.
“The Dine and Donate for Degrees movement is one way that we can give back and show
our appreciation for the work that the Mahone Foundation and the Mahone family have
done for the community,” Britt said. “A community of more than 25 restaurants coming
together for the future of young deserving students is enough for us to say ‘yes!’”
Waterfront Warehouse is one of two restaurants — along with Captain Mike’s — that will
launch the tour on May 12. On the dates to follow, the tour will span a wide range of
restaurant genres and styles.
Paul Campagna, owner of Grease & Honey Restaurants, said the Mahone Foundation’s
presence in the community — and its dedication to the success of local scholars for 25
years and counting — is just part of why his business group is proud to partner on the Dine
and Donate for Degrees initiative.
“All four of our independent restaurant locations — The Garage, Sazzy B, The Apis Hotel &
Restaurant, and The Buzz — are pleased to be a part of this,” Campagna said. “So come
and dine with us this month. With the community’s help, we’re certain that we can
generate significant financial impact that will directly benefit the lives of economically and
academically deserving youth in our community.”
One restaurant from outside of the Kenosha area, Caribana Island Grill in Gurnee, Ill., is
also participating. The reason is personal to General Manager Bret Paul.
“As the son of immigrants and being an immigrant myself, I understand the value of an
education as I completed my collegiate education in America,” Paul said. “We are proud to
align with the Mahone Foundation on this tour of restaurants and give back to this worthy
cause. Come have a taste of the Caribbean.”
Dine & Donate for Degrees is unique in that it creates an opportunity to support local
businesses, and a local nonprofit at the same time, said Dennis DuChene, President of
Visit Kenosha.
“It is groups working together and pooling resources that make us all successful,”
DuChene said. “It is nice to see collaborations like this that help support small
businesses, nonprofits, and members of our community all at the same time.”
Founded in 1999, the Mahone Foundation works to provide educational opportunities for
economically and academically deserving youth while also supporting healthy lifestyle
initiatives in the community.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the foundation’s signature Reaching for Rainbows
“Pursuit of Excellence” gala, which was held May 9 at Carthage College. At that event,
scholarships from the Mahone Foundation, Herzing University and Carthage were awarded
to high school students from Kenosha and Racine.
The Mahone Foundation’s Career Exploration Organization (CEO) Youth Scholarship
Program is a college and career readiness mentoring program that provides academic and
business activities for first-generation and low to moderate-income high school students
between the ages of 14-24 including current CEO scholarship recipients.
“The program matches students with academic and business advisors to explore, develop,
and pursue scholastic and career goals,” Mahone said.
