24th Annual Public Art Project: A Kites Wonderland – Artists Wanted!

This summer, Downtown Racine will soar to new heights as it transforms into an open-air art gallery for the 24th annual public art project hosted by the Downtown Racine Corporation (DRC). From Memorial weekend through mid-September, vibrant, whimsical metal kites will grace the streets, creating an immersive experience that blends creativity, community, and culture.

“We’re incredibly proud to celebrate over two decades of continuous public art installations,” said Kelly Kruse, Executive Director of the Downtown Racine Corporation. “This year’s focus on kites goes beyond enhancing the aesthetic appeal of our downtown. It’s about creating interactive, joyful spaces that invite selfies, spark creativity, and ultimately, find new homes as cherished garden art pieces after being auctioned.”

In a unique collaboration, the DRC is partnering with Gateway Technical College’s Welding Program to design and fabricate the kites. This partnership underscores the project’s commitment to community engagement while offering students a valuable, real-world learning experience.

“Our welding students are honored to contribute to this year’s public art project,” said Professor Kyle Worzala of Gateway Technical College. “It’s a fantastic opportunity for them to apply their skills in a meaningful way and give back to the community. This hands-on experience will instill a sense of professionalism and pride that will benefit them as they enter their careers. We hope it also inspires future students to explore our program and see the transformative power of education.”

Since its inception, the annual public art project has become a beloved tradition in Racine, drawing visitors and locals alike to experience the city’s vibrant creative spirit. The kites, crafted with precision and imagination, promise to elevate the streetscape, offering something for everyone—from art enthusiasts to families seeking summer fun.
